Grassroot Politics is what the Texas Republican Party used to be good at. Neighbors asking neighbors for support for state representation, not as a Governor but as a State Representative. If you are not represented by somebody paying the same type of property taxes, business taxes you are not confident in state politics. Grassroots is built from the ground up, hence the word grass.
It is not paid pundits, strategists or senior staff. It is the neighbor you know working quietly and hopefully in a way to make sure everyone knows your representative’s views and desires. If you don’t have it the first number to show on a ticket is the decline of state representatives of either party. It is not a surprise that our State representatives are declining under Tina Benkiser. Despite how much people would tell me she was grassroots, her unabashed need to seek power either at RNC or the Perry campaign speaks to her selling out of any grassroots.
She was not going to win in 2010, mainly because if you can’t get lower down elected no one cares who the Governor is. She has been almost beat more than once as Texas Republican Chair, Tina was out the door and I believe she knew it. Her only hope of Power is to keep Rick Perry in office, so she has something on her resume.
Tina has lead us from 88 to a 76 number in the house of State Representatives, which if my simple grassroots mind is correct is a loss on a local level. Which means the locals running for a Republican office will have a difficult time.
Pathetic, if you ask me that you would call Rick Perry governing for 9 years a victory when he won by 39% in 2006. Hang your hat on that nail and it will fall, Perry is not what most conservatives believe deep down a true conservative. Not when you look at his full record, his total disregard for Texans with TTC, HPV Mandates and the first institution of a Business Tax.
Tina is nothing more than Dwayne Horner, a paid staffer pretending to be grassroots while cashing the check and trashing other Republicans on the ticket. The more they try to say they are grassroots the less Perry looks like a viable candidate in a general election.
Tina will take her Rolodex, but trust me she has many enemies. Before Saturday I had allowed Tina a pass, others have told me for three cycles she was a huge mistake.
Her leaving was not well known, I would have heard wind of it. What it tells me is Perry is still ready to do anything to win. Tina being on his staff may not help him as much as he thinks, but that is no surprise grassroots he left during 2003.
Now as true grassroots we have to rebuild the party while Tina is paid to tear part of it down.
